HAU Activities HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS counceling and training

A Youth Peer Education seminar was organised in Kisozi for the youth in school which began on the 4th and ended on the 6th of November 2009.

This seminar was organized and facilitated by Hope Alive Uganda. The aim was to empower the young people with the necessary information to help them in fighting the scourge of HIV/AIDS through peer counseling and training. This came in handy in response to the report the United Nations Joint Department on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) passed out saying "Of the 2.5 million people infected yearly, young people ages 15-24 account for 40 percent of new infections. Poverty, unemployment, a lack of education, sexual violence and gender inequality increase the vulnerability of young people to HIV infection". We saw the need of using a multi-pronged approach to tackle this problem and this would probably have to put young people in the forefront of the struggle contrary to what the government policy is; of working for them-let the young people get involved.

Although world leaders committed in the (Declaration of Commitment) that by 2005, 90% of young people would know how to protect themselves from infection, in the hardest hit countries like Uganda, currently less than 40% of young men and less than 36% of young women can correctly identify how to prevent HIV.

This seminar also came in response to fulfill the commitment of which Uganda is part.

The seminar included students and pupils from the different schools. HAU invited 15 schools each to send 4 participants who will go back after the seminar and teach others.

During the first day of the seminar the following things were discussed: what is peer education? who is a peer? what are the roles of peers? what are the qualities of a good peer? Also it was discussed how one peer can influence others and the pupils discussed tips to influence peers. Some brainstorming games were done with the pupils.

At the end of the training, the pupils received a certificate.

On the 25th of November 2009, another seminar was organized on HIV/AIDS prevention.  This time it was not merely organised for pupils, but it was organized for the whole community.  It was possible to organize this follow up seminar thanks to a grant that HAU's HIV/AIDS educator, Eric Ojok, received.   The Aids Information Centre in Uganda donated 2000 condoms to Hope Alive Uganda around the same time.
